Childhood Comfort

By Kelly Grace Thomas

Today I need some warm chocolate

chip cookies and hugs from mom.

I need someone to run their fingers

through my hair, tell me I’m pretty

and sing me a lullaby until I fall asleep.

To smile when my clothes are mismatched

and there are bumps in my hair.

We wrap children in blankets of love

and then take them away when they get too old.
